Short answer: Before a VPN plan renews, record the next charge date and amount, where you bought it, and that channel's cancellation instructions. If you cancel, save the confirmation and check the next statement. Canceling future renewal does not by itself establish refund eligibility; check the provider's and payment channel's current terms separately.
This checklist is for organizing a subscription decision, not a universal cancellation procedure. A VPN subscription might be billed directly by its provider or through an app store or another seller. The receipt and payment statement can help identify the billing company. The FTC's consumer guidance recommends reviewing renewal terms, keeping a copy of a cancellation request, and watching statements after canceling. Its guidance is U.S.-focused; rules and processes vary by location.
Before the next renewal
- Find the billing record. Search for the original order confirmation, invoice, or app-store receipt. Note the provider or seller name and the account used. If it is unclear, compare the receipt with the billing descriptor on your bank or card statement; do not follow an unexpected renewal email's link or phone number to provide payment details.
- Write down the terms shown to you. Record the next renewal date, amount, currency, billing period, and whether a promotion or introductory period is ending. Check the signed-up plan and renewal notice rather than assuming the first charge repeats: renewal terms or prices may differ.
- Identify the cancellation channel. Check the account page and receipt to determine whether the provider, Apple, Google Play, or another seller handles billing. Uninstalling an app is not a cancellation confirmation.
- Choose a reminder date. If you plan to cancel before a renewal or trial deadline, set a reminder early enough to follow the billing channel's current process. Use the deadline in your own terms; this page does not set one.
Use the billing channel's own instructions
- Billed directly by the VPN provider: Sign in using the account associated with the receipt and follow the provider's current cancellation instructions. Save the request and any support response. A provider's process can change, so do not rely on another company's steps.
- Billed by Apple: Apple directs customers to manage Apple-billed subscriptions in Apple Account subscription settings. If the subscription is missing, Apple recommends checking the receipt and account used, then identifying the company shown as billing you. Follow Apple's current cancellation instructions.
- Billed by Google Play: Google Play says to cancel from the subscriptions area while signed in to the Google Account that holds the subscription; uninstalling the app does not cancel it. See Google Play's subscription instructions.
- Billed by another seller: Use that seller's official account or support instructions. A payment wallet or card may show a charge, but changing a payment method is not the same as confirming the subscription itself is canceled. Check with the billing company if the account route is unclear.
After you submit a cancellation
- Save the confirmation page, email, or support message. Note the date, account, plan, and any stated end-of-access date.
- Reopen the subscription page or contact the billing company through a known official channel if the status is ambiguous. Keep a copy of any follow-up conversation.
- Check the next statement for another charge. If a charge appears after cancellation, gather the receipt and cancellation record, contact the billing company, and ask your card issuer or payment provider about its dispute process if needed. The FTC outlines this record-keeping and follow-up approach for U.S. consumers.
- If you want money back for a past charge, check the applicable refund terms and request a refund separately. Cancellation alone does not promise a refund, and this checklist does not determine eligibility.
Copyable renewal record
| Record | What to write down |
|---|---|
| Service and plan | Provider name, plan name, and account identifier you can recognize (do not include a password). |
| Renewal | Date, amount, currency, billing interval, and any promotion end date shown in your terms. |
| Billing channel | Provider, Apple, Google Play, or other seller, based on the receipt and account record. |
| Refund terms review | Open the current official policy for the billing channel. Record the policy URL, date checked, purchase or renewal date used to calculate any stated window, eligible payment method, exclusions, and who handles the request. Set a separate reminder before the deadline shown in your own terms; there is no universal refund window. |
| Cancellation | Official instructions used, date submitted, confirmation saved, and stated access end date. |
| Follow-up | Date you checked the next statement and any support or payment-provider case reference. |
For comparing the charges across plans, use the VPN subscription cost calculator with amounts from your own checkout terms. It estimates recurring charges from your entries; it does not check current prices, cancellation terms, or refund eligibility. For broader provider criteria, see the VPN comparison.

Common questions
Does deleting the VPN app cancel billing?
Do not treat app deletion as proof of cancellation. Google Play explicitly says uninstalling an app does not cancel its subscription. Check the subscription with the company or store that bills you.
Will cancellation refund the latest payment?
Not automatically. Cancellation and a refund request are separate; consult the current terms for the provider and billing channel and submit any refund request through the appropriate route.
What if I cannot find the subscription?
Check the receipt and the accounts you use, then identify the billing company from the statement. Apple also recommends checking which Apple Account appears on its receipt. Contact the company shown as billing you using a verified support route.
What if I was charged after canceling?
Keep the cancellation confirmation and charge record, contact the billing company, and ask your card issuer or payment provider about available dispute steps. The FTC's linked guide describes U.S. consumer follow-up; local processes and rights may differ.
