Short answer: A free VPN plan, a time-limited free trial, and a money-back guarantee are different offers. A free plan has no paid purchase to refund. A trial may convert to a paid subscription unless canceled by its deadline. A money-back guarantee applies after a purchase and only under its stated window, payment channel, and exclusions. Check the exact checkout and provider terms before paying.
This is a comparison of provider-published examples, not an endorsement or a guarantee that a particular purchase qualifies. Policies and offers can vary by country, seller, plan, and payment method. The examples below were checked on 2026-11-03; verify the linked terms again at checkout.
Three different ways to try a VPN
| Offer | What it means | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan | A provider makes a no-charge plan available, often with limits that differ from paid service. There is no trial deadline or purchase to refund while you stay on that plan. | Features, account or device limits, data or speed limits, and whether upgrading starts a paid subscription. |
| Free trial | A limited period to use a plan before or as it becomes paid. It can require payment details and can convert to a charge if not canceled on time. | Start and end time, eligible plans and payment methods, whether it auto-converts, the first charge and renewal amount, and how to cancel. |
| Money-back guarantee | A provider's stated refund policy after you make a purchase. It is not the same as having free service: you pay first and must meet the policy terms. | Which purchase date starts the window, whether it is limited to the first purchase, eligible payment channels, excluded add-ons, and the required request route. |
Current provider examples
- Proton VPN: Its published plan page describes a free plan separately from a 30-day money-back guarantee for paid plans. Its refund instructions say a qualifying request for a recent purchase should go to Proton support; it says it cannot refund bank-transfer or cash payments, and App Store purchases require a request through Apple. Google Play purchases may be handled through Proton support or Google Play. Read the linked current policy for the full terms.
- Mullvad: Its refund page states a 14-day guarantee for some payment methods. It lists credit card, PayPal, Google Play, Swish, and bank wire as covered, while App Store purchases, cash, cryptocurrency, and vouchers are not refunded by Mullvad. App Store and voucher purchases are handled by the seller; bank-wire refunds are limited to SEPA payments within Europe.
- Surfshark: Its support article describes a 7-day trial for eligible new users buying specified 12- or 24-month plans through its website with listed payment methods. The article says the payment is charged after the trial and a refund can still be requested within the separate 30-day guarantee. Its refund article and terms include conditions: the guarantee applies to the initial purchase, not a renewed subscription, and some add-ons and seller channels are excluded or handled by the seller. Confirm the checkout offer and current terms before relying on either period.
These examples are not directly interchangeable: “30 days” or “14 days” does not by itself tell you whether your payment method, store purchase, renewal, or add-on qualifies. Provider support pages can also change after this guide is checked.
Before starting a trial or paying
- Save the offer terms. Record the offer name, trial length if any, when the clock starts, first charge date, currency, and renewal price or interval shown at checkout.
- Check who bills you. Note whether payment goes to the VPN provider, Apple, Google Play, or another reseller. Refund and cancellation requests may need to go to that seller.
- Find the exact refund conditions. Look for the starting date, eligible payment methods, first-purchase or one-time restrictions, renewal exclusions, and non-refundable extras.
- Find the cancellation route before signing up. Save the official instructions and set a reminder before the trial or renewal deadline. A reminder does not cancel the subscription.
- Keep records. Save the checkout page or terms, receipt, cancellation confirmation, and any refund request response. Check the next statement.
- If a charge appears, ask promptly. Contact the billing company through its official support channel. If a subscription was billed through an app store, check that store's refund process. A provider's guarantee does not replace any rights that may apply under local consumer law.
The FTC's U.S. consumer guidance recommends checking trial length, future charges, and cancellation instructions before signing up, then saving records and monitoring statements. Its advice is U.S.-focused; laws and payment processes differ elsewhere. For a reminder and records checklist, see how to track VPN renewal and cancellation details. To compare charges using your own checkout terms, use the VPN subscription cost calculator; it does not determine refund eligibility.
Common questions
Does a money-back guarantee mean the VPN is free for that period?
No. A guarantee applies after a paid purchase and may require a request that meets the provider's terms. You may need to pay first and seek a refund through a specified channel. A free plan is a separate no-charge offer; a free trial is a separate time-limited offer that may convert to a paid subscription.
Will I get a refund if I cancel?
Cancellation and a refund are separate actions. Cancellation usually concerns future renewal; refund eligibility depends on the current provider terms, seller, payment method, timing, and purchase details.
What if I bought the VPN through an app store?
Check the provider's instructions and the app store's own refund process. The provider may direct App Store requests to Apple or may have different handling for Google Play. Use the seller shown on your receipt and do not assume a provider-direct guarantee automatically applies to a store purchase.
Can I rely on the examples in this guide for a future purchase?
No. The examples were checked on 2026-11-03 and can change. Confirm the terms displayed for your country, plan, seller, and payment method at the time you buy.
